The Asian International Law Association (AILAS) was formally established during the Second AILAS General Assembly on November 24, 2016, in Seoul, South Korea. The establishment of AILAS was initiated by a group of law scholars and practitioners from around Asia who believed that an organization dedicated to the promotion of international law scholarship and practice in Asia is needed.
Asian International Law Association
The Asian International Law Association (AILAS) was established in 1998. It is the first regional association of international lawyers with members from all over Asia, including Japan and Korea. AILAS is a non-profit organization headquartered in Hong Kong, which aims at promoting international law studies and practice by organizing conferences, seminars, workshops, and other activities throughout the year. The main objective of AILAS is to establish a platform for international legal professionals in Asia and other related fields to exchange ideas and experiences, as well as to promote the development of international law studies in Asia. The association also aims at strengthening the relationship among member countries or regions through cooperation between governments, law schools, associations, and other institutions.
Formation of the Asian International Law Association
The Asian International Law Association (AILAS) was established in response to the growing need for an organization that would promote the development of international law in Asia. AILAS was formed at a meeting held on 25-27 May 1995 at Tsinghua University, Beijing, China. The meeting was attended by over 60 scholars and practitioners from most countries in Asia and Australia who shared an interest in promoting international law scholarship as well as practical legal solutions to contemporary problems confronting Asia’s diverse societies.
Asian International Law Association General Assembly
The first Asian International Law Association General Assembly was held in New Delhi, India on 26-27 February 2018. The event was hosted by the National Law University and Organized by the International Law Department at NLSIU Bangalore. The number of participants was around 80 including delegates from 23 countries and observers from 5 countries including Japan, Korea, Pakistan, etc. There were also 3 observers from African states including Ethiopia who participated in an event organized by AILAS Kenya Chapter earlier this year (more about it later).
Establishment of Asian International Law Association Working Groups
The Asian International Law Association Working Groups are established to facilitate the exchange of ideas and information between Asian legal scholars and practitioners. The establishment of these working groups is also aimed at providing a platform for academic exchanges between Asian legal scholars and practitioners. The Working Groups listed below have been formed by AILA’s Executive Committee:
- Human Rights (HR) Group.
- Intellectual Property Law (IP) Group.
- International Trade Law (ITL) Group.
- Dispute Resolution & Arbitration Practice Group (DRAPG).
Asian International Law Association Service Structure
Asian International Law Association is governed by a General Assembly, which is composed of all AILAS members. The General Assembly will meet at least once every two years at the AILAS Annual Conference. The General Assembly will elect two officers of the General Assembly and an Executive Committee consisting of not less than three nor more than seven persons (including at least one Vice-President). The Executive Committee shall be responsible for carrying out all resolutions made by the General Assembly during its term in office. The President shall preside over meetings of both bodies; he or she shall also call meetings when necessary or upon request by any two members. In addition to these duties outlined above, it is important that each person involved with AILA understands what types of roles they can play within our organization.
Asian International Law Association Provide an Academic Exchange Platform
International law is one of the most important fields of study for students and professionals in law, politics, and economics. In order to be able to understand international relations, it is essential to have a basic understanding of international law.
The world has become increasingly globalized since World War II because of technological advancements in transportation and communication systems; this has led to an increase in cross-border trade and investment activities as well as migration flows between countries. In addition, various forms of transnational crime such as terrorism or human trafficking have increased due to globalization processes which allow individuals from different nations to access each others’ territories more easily than before (World Trade Organization). As a result, there has been an increasing demand for lawyers who specialize in international trade relations or criminal justice issues such as extradition matters involving individuals suspected of committing crimes across national borders (United Nations Office on Drugs & Crime).
Conclusion
With the formation of AILAS, we hope that more research and academic exchanges between Asian countries can be conducted. In addition, we also expect that this will lead to greater cooperation between lawyers from different Asian countries in solving various legal issues faced by their clients.
